Michael Stoneburner has taken his own early life experiences—struggles no child should ever have had to deal with—and turned them into a truly inspiring tale of survival and optimism in the most oppressively adverse conditions.

The story of young Michael is a whole roller-coaster of emotions to which I personally connected on a deep and meaningful level. The book tells the autobiographical tale of Michael’s struggles to cope with a dysfunctional and abusive family life, rejection by peers and authority figures over his unique quirks and differences, and the loss of loved ones who were the only shining lights in his otherwise grim world. If not for his beloved companion Whiskey the cat, who knows to what darkness Michael may have succumbed?

I feel this book is a work of significance with regard to the subject matter discussed, as it tells a true story of survival and overcoming a seemingly hopeless life of abuse; of escaping the dark and lonely world in which young Michael finds himself, and finding those lights which illuminate a path out.

In this book, Stoneburner gives a voice to the victims of abusive and dysfunctional situations and gives the hope that they, too, can survive. They, too, can overcome. They, too, can live on to brighter days and go on to tell their own stories.

It made me cry, several times. I’m not gonna lie. It also made me laugh at the hilarious interpretation of the people and the world around them through the eyes of a curious child.

I rate this book 5/5 stars, and I look forward to seeing the next installment.
